The 1920s Radio Network officially began broadcasting on May 8, 2004. Prior to this we were completely affiliated with our flagship low power AM Stereo radio stations, WBDH Radio. Our AM outlets play the more modern Big Band arrangements and Christian & Gospel.
In 1995 WBDH radio began the big band format. Soon we included a lot of the older 1930s music and in 1999 had expanded our library to include songs from the 20s. Our original AM facility began streaming to the internet in 2002. It was then that the idea of a whole new radio facility was first thought of- an idea to fill the void of the daily drone of ‘cookie cutter’ internet radio. It would be two years before this would happen.
Plans and drawings were sketched and re sketched all during 2003 for the new proposed radio facility. A second AM station was planned. An internet-only station playing music from the 20s was first put on paper; late in 2003 “The 1920s Radio Network” was decided upon.
February 2004 saw the unofficial groundbreaking for the new WBDH / 1920s Radio Network studios. The buildings went up in March and the painstakingly difficult challenge of studio construction and wire-out took the entire month of April to complete. On May 8th the 1920s Radio Network was born. Twenty days later both of our AM Stereo facilities signed on the air from the new studios.
Since then our network has improved our programs, increased our listenerbase, widened our audience by including over-the-air services via WHRO FM, and has had many technical improvements such as installing a 35KW diesel generator to keep us going for days and days in the event of an emergency.
