WCPE 89.7 FM embraces a global audience with their dedication to excellence in classical music programming. The station feels it is their duty to enhance the quality of life in the Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill area and beyond with accessible classical music 24 hours a day. WCPE is an independent, non-commercial, listener supported station that is owned and operated by the Educational Information Corporation, a North Carolina non-profit broadcasting organization. WCPE 89.7 FM conducts two on-air fundraising campaigns each year to aid with costs of station production and operation. Other than those two weeks, WCPE is dedicated to sharing the best of classical music with listeners across the globe. Tune in around the clock to hear your favorites from composers like Beethoven, Dvorak, Pachelbel, Bach, Mozart, Rachmoninov, Holst, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Handel, Barber and Smetana.
Programming on WCPE 89.7 FM includes Metropolitan Opera performances, artist interviews and many specialty music sets. During the Metropolitan Opera season, WCPE broadcasts live performances every Saturday at 1:30 pm. WCPE also showcases other opera performances every Thursday at 7 pm, even when the Met is not in season. Every Sunday from 6 pm to 9 pm, WCPE 89.7 FM announces upcoming classical music events and features artist interviews on their show Preview. Past interviewees include Simone Dinnerstein, the Five Browns, Leon Fleisher, Rachel Portman, Zuill Bailey and Ranny Umberger. Specialty music sets on WCPE 89.7 FM include features like Mozart Madness, Simply Strings Weekend, Russian Romantics Weekend, and Beethovenfest.
If you don’t hear your favorite classical piece during one of these specialty music sets, you can always submit your request to be played during the Saturday Evening Request Program. Each Saturday from 6 pm to midnight listeners determine the playlist airing on WCPE 89.7 FM. Simply submit your request online and listen for your favorites during the show. WCPE 89.7 FM also features another all-request program – All-Request Friday, the last Friday of every month from 9 am to 10 pm, Eastern Time.
