With the internet, it’s sometimes hard to remember that we live in a big world. Despite the closeness that technology can make us feel, some societies are simply polar opposites when it comes to culture and social understandings. It may be hard for me, a Canadian, to go to Croatia and instantaneously understand the customs and language. Through time I would imagine that I would find a way to fit in nicely, sure, but the differences in the two cultures will doubtlessly remain forever. That’s what makes music such a compelling aspect of our lives, as it may well be the one universal language. And that’s where Radio 1 Top 40 Croatian comes in. On my imaginary trip to Croatia, I might feel a little bit lonely for North American pomp and circumstance. But thanks to Radio 1 Top 40 Croatian, I have nothing to fear.

Playing a mix of music that will make me feel right at home, I can start packing my suitcase now knowing that Radio 1 Top 40 Croatian has my back. Heck, I’m even jamming to it now as I brush my teeth. See, with a playlist that includes Rihanna, The Killers, Coldplay, T.I., Kanye West, Katy Perry (incorrectly spelled Katty Perry on the Radio 1 Top 40 Croatian website), and many others, I’ve got nothing to fear when I land in their lovely country. And this pop music that I find so charming is accompanied by friendly DJs and announcers that, despite speaking in their native tongue, really do bring a tone of invitation and celebration to the proceedings. So with a radio station playing what I can understand and a series of music from artists I adore, I’m set for my trip to Croatia and you should be too.

If you’re not planning a trip there anytime soon and you still want to see what’s cracking Croatian-style, you can tune in to Radio 1 Top 40 Croatian online at radio1.hr. The site is set up like a big radio, which is cool, and you can get at the tracks by clicking the giant flashing button at the bottom of the screen marked “Live Streaming.” Don’t be shy.
