Broadcasting by Central Broadcasting System or CBS, RTI 1 is Radio Taiwan International and its signal reaches the far reaches of the planet. The Central Broadcasting System has no relationship with the CBS in the United States and is an independent, government-run radio station network. RTI 1, which used to be Radio Taipei International, became what it is today in 2003 after changing over from the old name. RTI 1 gets most of its budget from the government, but it is not a station under the control of the government. That means that RTI has the freedom to broadcast concepts and other pieces of information that may not be agreeable to the government. The government provides funding, however, and lends the station its support in respect to freedom of speech and broadcasting laws permitting such occurrences. The budget for RTI 1 needs to be passed each year by the government, so bills and amendments are constantly being brought up. Regardless, RTI has continued in its quest for integrity and has never sold out standard values of freedom of expression in order to appease the funders. Amazingly, this has allowed RTI 1 to broadcast in a number of languages including Mandarin Chinese, Minnan, Hakka, Cantonese, Indonesian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish.
