Talk Radio Shows – More than Just Relationship Advice

The term ‘talk radio’ usually brings to mind images likewise to that of the popular television show “Frasier” – that is, a balding middle aged psychologist offering free advice through the radio airwaves. But talk radio is much more. The popular radio format is devoted to running segments for the discussion of topical issues – not just relationship advice. Listeners can tune into hundreds of stations across the country, featuring a wide selection of topics like ethics and morality, health and medicine, computers, science, religion, automobiles, finance, business, entertainment, and even sports (although Sports Radio is generally considered a separate genre of talk radio).

Segments usually feature regular hosts, who interview a number of different guests in studio, or online. Listeners are often invited to call in and share their opinions – although listener contributions are usually screened by the show’s producer(s) in order to maximize audience interest and attract advertising.

Talk radio stations run segments on a variety of topics twenty-four-seven, often separating each show with advertisements. In public or non-commercial radio, advertising messages might be replaced with music.

It is a common misconception that talk radio is only available on the AM frequencies. On the contrary, FM stations and satellite radio are huge providers of a wide selection of talk radio. AM stations generally host segments with a more of a political or topical discussion, while FM and satellite talk radio might focus on the entertainment value of talk radio. Shock Jocks, as they are commonly referred to, like Howard Stern, Otie and Anthony (of the “Odie and Anthony Show”), and Tom Leykis, often rely on segments that are largely comical in nature to attract an audience. Callers might be challenged to a variety of different contests for the chance to win a prize.

Perhaps the largest provider of talk radio, CBS, possesses the ability to reach millions of listeners on a daily basis. The radio giant owns nearly 180 stations across 22 states, and hosts a variety of talk and music radio.

Talk radio is popular because it is free, accessible, and innately relevant. Listeners can tune into segments of particular interest to them, and if they wish, can call in to share their opinion with other listeners, or even call to ask a question of the host or their guest(s). Talk radio is available online, too. Most stations host a live feed on their websites for listeners to log on, and tune in. Some listeners may even be inspired to start their own show.

In 2005, the technology for internet based talk radio became extremely cost effective. Now an individual can access a variety of services to host their own internet based radio segment without investing any of their own capital. With limitless availability, and a wide variety of content, it is no surprise that talk radio is vastly popular. Tune in from home, the office, in your car, or online for segments on any topic or issue that might interest you.
