Sports Radio for the Avid Fan on the Go In this digital age, it is surprising that the radio has survived with little decline in popularity. The format is accessible, free (to Listeners), and diverse, providing the average commuter or home listener a wide variety of programs to choose from. Entire networks can be devoted to only music, news, talk, weather, or sports. The term Sports Radio refers to the radio format specifically focused on the broadcasting and discussion of various sporting events. The boisterous style of play-by-play commentary of key sporting events, and sports discussion from on air hosts and call-in listeners, markets itself to an almost exclusively male demographic in most parts of the country. Aside from being carried in both local and syndicated forms, many satellite radio networks carry 24 hour Sports Programming for the avid sports fan. Two of the largest Sports Radio Broadcasts come from two of the largest sports television broadcasts: Fox Sports, and ESPN. In 2000, Fox Network launched Fox Sports Radio exclusively for sports discussion and broadcast twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. To date, the station can reach millions of listeners through 290 affiliates across Canada and the U.S.A. Listeners tune in for live broadcasts of prolific sporting events, as well as daily programs like “The Fox National Sports Report,” which runs through sporting highlights and headlines every twenty minutes. ESPN Radio was launched in 1992, and has a slightly more extensive daily and weekly schedule of sports programming. The network airs live coverage of Major League Baseball, College Football, NBA, and the National Invitation Tournament games. In 2006, the station introduced ESPN Radio Insider, providing sports broadcasts to subscribers of Sirius Satellite Radio, and XM Satellite Radio. Additionally, ESPN Radio offers many daily shows for sports fans all day long. Listeners can tune in to the Morning show with Mike Golic, former football player, and Mike Greenberg, veteran sports journalist, or check out ESPN’s daily program Game Night. The nightly program, hosted by various personalities features in-game updates, guests, and in-depth analysis of the day’s top sports stories. Many local stations host their own versions of Sports Talk Radio, broadcast local and national coverage of various sporting events, or broadcast sporting events from the web. Log on, and tune in. Sports broadcasts are very popular with those who spend a great deal of time in their cars. Listeners can continue to catch sports highlights without the need to be at the game, or near a television set. Attending games in person, although significantly more exciting, is a costly venture. Sports Radio, available in high definition broadcast in some areas, provides an alternative to attending sporting events, or missing the game altogether! |
