Amos & Andy

Who Watched Amos & Andy:
Every night over 40 million – that’s how many people were hooked onto this show at the very least. The show ran for 4000 episodes spanning 15 years. Little wonder it became such an important event where American broadcasting was concerned. It didn’t matter that the producers were white - writing the roles of black men. It didn’t matter that you couldn’t see them – all that mattered was to follow those episodes and not miss a single one of the. The scene had been set for wooing people to becoming a captive audience with a gripping serial. For a radio show that began way back in 1925, this was stupendous.

The People in the Amos & Andy Show:
The writers were Freeman F. Gosden and Charles J. Correll. They were also the producers of the series. In ’20, they met in North Carolina in Durham and by the fall of ’25, they were already performing song and pattern routines on a nightly basis on WGN which was a station for Chicago Tribune. Based on the fact that the Tribune actually syndicated the popular comic strip by Sidney Smith entitled “The Gumps”, the WGN executive felt that this serialized drama would also do really well on the radio.

The main roles in Amos and Andy were played by the following actors - Alvin Childress played Amos Jones, Spencer Williams played Andrew Hogg Brown, Tim Moore played George Stevens, Ernestine Wade played Sapphire Stevens, Amanda Rudolph played Ramona Smith, and Lillian Randolph played Madame Queen.

As time passed, there were some changes that took place in the show, but most things remained the same. As with any other show as well, the cast and crew are going to change from time to time because of several different things.

Even though it is such an old show, most people even today are familiar with the show and even though they might not have seen an episode, the show has passed on to the annals of radio history.
