80s New Wave
|
Pioneers of the early Electra pop and disco like Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder left their impression on New Wave roo Dance music was revolutionized by disco but the dawn of the 80s saw an extensive reaction that sent it underground. This meant New Wave had to keep the music scene buoyant.
Overview of New Wave: The term “New Wave” brings with it some amount of confusion. The head of Sire Records, Seymour Stein needed a line he could use as a marketing strategy for his freshly signed don bands that played at the CBGB clubs. US radio consultants had decreed that punk rock music was just a fad and so stein decided to go with the simple “New Wave”. Stein believed that this music was similar to the French New Wave of the 60’s in films. Since his artist were quite like the French film makers being anti-corporate and experimental and part of the generation that was raised to be critical consumers of art. The term New Wave was often interchanged with Punk. But listeners are an intelligent lot and soon they could tell the difference between Punks and other music. New Wave subsequently went on to imply less noise, more pop and they would include acts manufactured by record labels. The darker groups who were not so influenced by pop were referred to as post-punks. Video Blast: Everything in the world of music underwent a change with the video revolution. Music as an art form was given an entirely new dimension with the advent of the music video which was fueled by the New wave movement. MTV is fallout of this revolution. It can be credited with the rise and fall of many new wave artists. It is possible that America would have slept through the new wave movement or stagnated on arena rock if it had not been for the video. The bands enhanced their mystery via these videos and the effect was intoxicating. The narrative, the style, the fashion and the make-up made insignificant bands appear impressive. |
