70s Rock

During the mid seventies, punk rock was established following the protopunk music - the main genre of music that was listened to during the latter part of the  sixties and it also opened the door for all of the bands such as the Ramones to be the leaders of the genre.

The rough instrumentals and the strong political themes that were so characteristic of the punk rock genre didn’t appeal to everyone. Instead, there was a subculture created which followed the emergence of the punk genre of music. It was this subculture that quickly became associated with rebellious, disillusioned, youth as well as mentality of an anti-government.

Even though punk music is enjoyed a relative amount of fame within the United Kingdom during the latter part of the seventies, the music genre didn’t enjoy all that much popularity elsewhere. Typically, the punk bands were known for rejecting mainstream culture and it wasn’t until the century turned that punk music became popular based on the alternative rock genre emerging.

Characteristics of Rock Music:
Artists and bands such as Patti Smith and The Clash exemplified every single thing that punk music stood for. Their thought provoking lyrics and stripped down music really proved that punk music was a very distinct genre set apart from everything else. Even though the early forms of punk bands were being influenced by the sixties harsh sounds of garage rock, it was truly apparent that punk rock certainly served a whole other fan base.

Punk music’s typical characteristics included vocals that normally sound nasal as well as the front woman or man screaming all of the lyrics instead of singing them in a normal manner. Usually, punk songs are extremely short and most of the songs will clock in at a little less than two minutes. However, with the emergence of rock music, there are several bands that chose to stray away from that.

In addition to most of the formats of punk music songs being a little similar in nature, the lyrics of these songs were normally to the point and blunt. These lyrics dealt with a lot of real life issues such as crime, government, social problems and poverty. The punk rock music genre redefined the entire music scene and the people at that time that didn’t have bands that they could be identified with before this period had several songs that spoke directly to the world’s issues and the reality of them.
