Symphonic Black Metal

Often in symphonic black metal the tempo is slower and the structure of the song is a little more defined, the bands are able to make more extensive keyboarding use or they either use a complete orchestra, such as you will find in symphonic metal. Gothic metal also has its influence in this genre of music along with traits of gothic metal like guitar riffs that are clean and female vocals.

There are even times that a song may begin with a very clean introduction before they go into the riffs that are distorted of the guitar. Bands still use corpse paint and the lyrics are known to be reminiscent of the black metal music genre, although anti-Christianity could be an extreme. There are many fans of black metal that have claimed that the symphonic music genre of black metal actually has absolutely nothing to do with the true black metal because of the influences from melodic black metal and gothic metal, which aren’t present within the traditional black metal.

Cultural Origins of Symphonic Black Metal:
Symphonic black metal has cultural origins in the latter part of the eighties and the early to mid nineties in Scandinavian and Switzerland. The typical instruments that are used in this genre of music include bass, guitar, drums, piano, keyboard, violin as well as other electronic and acoustic instruments.

The mainstream popularity is mostly underground even though there are a couple of bands that have been included within the metal mainstream.

Symphonic Black Metal in Relationship to Melodic Black Metal:
Sometimes, there is a great deal of confusion between melodic black metal and symphonic black metal because both are subgenres of black metal. Both subgenres have tempos that are slower and a song structure that is more defined. Sometimes, this leads to the bands that perform symphonic black metal to be classified erroneously as a form of melodic black music metal and so on and so forth. However, the symphonic black metal music genre is known to make extensive use of instruments that are found in symphonies, even though melodic black metal is known to focus more on the solos and guitar melodies. However, most bands will combine the traits that come from both genres.

Sometimes, there is also a little confusion between gothic metal and symphonic black metal. The traits like clean guitar riffs as well as female vocals are normally used in both. The main difference is that when symphonic music genre of black metal is actually a subgenre of black metal, the gothic metal genre isn’t. Another factor is that the gothic metal’s guitar work is a little less distorted than it is in symphonic black metal. Aside from all of this, the symphonic black metal elements that are synthesized within gothic metal are influenced more by the classical music.
