Akon:
Aliuane Badara Thiam was born on the 30th of April, ’73, he is better known by Akon, his stage name and he is a contemporary R&B, Senegalese-American hip hop, songwriter, rhythm and blues singer, record producer and occasional rapper. Akon rose to fame following his single release “Locked Up” which came from his debut album entitled “Trouble”. Konvicted, his second album, earned him a nomination from a Grammy for “Smack that” the single.

Akon is the founder of Kon Live Distribution and Konvict Muzik. He is also popularly known for all of his singing hoops and he has over one hundred and thirty guest appearances and twenty one Billboard Hot 100 songs to credit him. Akon is the only rapper to ever have accomplished the feat of holding both the first and second spot on the Billboard Charts Hot 100 twice simultaneously.

Rihanna:
Another very respectable and notable R&B singer is Rihanna who was born as Robyn Rihanna Fenty on the 20th of February, ’88 and is considered to be a Bajan singer. Rihanna is the very first female and the person second known from the Barbados to have been granted a Grammy Reward. Currently, Rihanna is signed to the label of Def Jam Recordings.

Contrary to the popular belief within Barbados, Rihanna wasn’t honored with a national holiday on February 21st. It was during a tribute made to Rihanna that she was designated as the cultural ambassador and was presented with the land parcel located within Apes Hill, St James.

Silena Murrell:
Last but not least, the last notable rhythm and blues singer that we are going to discuss is Silena Murrell a rhythm and blues artist that was able to shot to fame during the time that she wrote the hit single entitled The Braxton’s, entitled “Never Say Goodbye. Some of her musical influences include Karen Clarke and Chaka Kahn. She is well known mostly for Bring It Home, her debut single.

Not that you have some idea concerning the R&B singers that are popular right now, you are well on your way to learning even more about rhythm and blues. Even though rhythm and blues is a very popular music genre, it wouldn’t be that popular if it wasn’t for the artists that spend most of their time dedicated to the music that they are producing.

Some may say that the artists don’t get enough credit and that may be true in some cases, but look at where the rhythm and blues music genre is today and where it has came from, if it hadn’t of been for the artists, they would have had all that popularity among the mainstream.
