Pysch Folk Music

Folk Music by Different Names:
While in the USA it goes by the name psych folk or sometimes even new weird America, In  Europe, it is called by various names like weird folk, nu folk, or even freakfolk. However, like a rose by any other name, psych folk has the same characteristics, no matter what it is called. Some people see minor differences when it is called psych folk as against folk psych and depending which comes first, that genre tends to dominate, they say.

What Came Before:
The strange thing about this music is that the people who are fans today have resurrected instances of psych folk from the past an there are a number of singers ad bands who fit into this music style. So there seems to be a second wind for them with the same music but packaged with a new name. Many of them are British and you find names like Donovan, the amazing Nick Drake, Fairport Convention and Vashti Bunyan finding a place in this classification. There are bands as well like Pink Floyd and T-Rex. There are a few bands in America too that have been included like Fugs, Pearls before Swine, etc.

Since the nineties, this particular style has included some pairing like John Wills and Pinkie Maclure, which is known as Pumajaw within Scotland. Elephant 6 the recording company that is Georgia based includes bands such as Neutral Milk Hotel which has also been known to release some records of psych folk.

The latest psych folk artist generation includes Circulus, The Magnetic Zeros and Edward Sharp, The Slant Entrance, Alela Diane, Devendra Banhart, Alina Harden, Arborea, Akron and Family, Joanna Newsom, Jana Hunter, Lord Jeff, Damien Youth, Red Hunter, Vetiver, Espers, and Feathers. In the revival of psych folk music, Michael Gira has also been of assistance. Gira could have named Angels of Light, his newest project, after the hippie Hibiscus San Francisco transcendental theatre group which has the exact same name and is held responsible for guiding the career of the new stars of pysch folk stars.
