Oldies Music
|
Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets probably was one great symbol of the songs that were imprinted forever in people’s harts and memories. The songs captured a feeling that even today evokes strong sentimentality from the people who once knew and loved them.
A Certain Kind Of Number: You’ll notice that it isn’t every 50s song that comes under the category of oldies. It is usually the rock, pop, and rhythm and blues genres that seem to be within this group. Even though there were a lot of jazz and country music that were very popular during this decade, somehow they don’t get into the ‘Oldies’ classification. Where Oldies Music All Began: It began a bit before Bill Haley or Chuck Berry or Elvis Presley though they carried this decade on to glory. Post-war saw many African Americans like Louis Jordan and Big Joe Turner booming into the music scene. Suddenly this started plating in roadhouses and there were jukeboxes springing up all over, giving music a definite fillip into the future. Then musicians like Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee hit the right spot in the teenager zone and suddenly there was the energy of a new kind of music all over the land. Music became something to tap one’s foot to, dance to and enjoy. It was like a new formula was born – and there was an opening out, an outpouring. Oldies Music is More Than Just Elvis: Elvis of course made music more than just sensational – it became an obsession with the youth of that generation. He sang to them, he wooed the, his music made them dream and dance. There were others too – from Pat Boone to Perry Como to more. Each in their own right was famous and made a mark on this decade – who would have thought then that more than half a century later you would still hear those numbers and still want to get up, throw your inhibitions aside and dance? |
