Nerdcore Hip Hop

MC Frontalot is a self-described musician of nerdcore hip hop and has coined the term during the turn of the century in the song titled “Nerdcore Hip Hop”. Frontalot as well as other nerdcore artists, was able to self-publish all of this work and he has released a lot of his work for free of charge on the internet.

Since nerdcore hip hop is considered to be niche genre, it generally is going to hold to the DIY ethic and it has a history of self-production and self-publishing. The rappers of the nerdcore genre are known to rhyme about everything from politics to science fiction. One of their perennial favorites in nerdcore hip hop matter is Star Wars, computers and science.

There is some music out there that has a similar theme - however the different styles of music can be located in the filk and geek rock genre. There are also some hip hop artists that have recorded some compositions that will focus on topics that are similar, but they aren’t considered nerdcore generally. However, conversely, an individual doesn’t have to concentrate on these particular topics in order to be considered nerdcore.

MC Chris and Frontalot don’t narrowly focus on nerdy topics that are stereotypical; the main difference is mainly one of self-identification. Blackalicious doesn’t identify themselves as nerds, while Chris and Frontalot do. The term “Nerdcore” is occasionally used as an adjective in order to describe a hardcore nerd or anything that is nerdy to an extreme level.

Sounds of Nerdcore Hip Hop:
Nerdcore hip hop doesn’t have any unifying musical sound, and the actual sound of nerdcore is known to vary a great deal from one MC to another. One of the common themes, especially during the earlier days of this genre is known to be unclear sampling. There are several DJs that have provided different beats and perform remixes for multiple nerdcore artists, like Badd Spellah who is currently mixing the majority of tracks that Frontalot performed.

Overall, there isn’t any canonical definition to the term “nerdcore”. However, the definition that is most generally used would be a rapper that is a nerd. But you should keep in mind that not everyone accepts this.
