Bob Dylan was the one who probably set the ball rolling. From then on, one can detect shades of folk in many a rock musician’s repertoire. There were the Mamas and the Papas, the Byrds and later, The Eagles. Earlier, Jackie DeShannon introduced the circular 12-string guitar riffs and this was to become one of the pillars of folk rock. The Byrds were probably the best folk punk band. Their electric version of Tambourine Man catapulted them into the company of the greats. They followed this up with a whole lot of original songs and all of them were superlative. Influenced as they were by the Beatles, they went on to becoming superstars.

Beginning from a style of folk rock music from North America, Fairport and Pentangle as well as several other bands looked for folk inspiration from within Britain. Then in Brittany, Alan Stivell started to mix his own Breton roots with Scottish and Irish roots as well as with rock music.

The folk rock music genre has cultural origins within the sixties in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. The typical instruments that are used within folk rock are the acoustic and electric guitar, the drums, the bass guitar and the piano.
