Dance punk which is also referred to as punk-funk or disco-punk is considered to be a music genre. The style of dance-punk was championed by punk and rock oriented bands like Radio 4 and Liars, along with dance oriented acts like Out Hud. Some of the other groups like The Rapture fell right in the middle. Since then there has been musical form crystallization within the dance-punk music genre, with Not U and Q exploring the aspects of the dance-punk music genre, along with the post hardcore music genre as well as other musical styles. The music genre, dance-punk, is considered to be somewhat of a resurgence of the underground scene in New York from ’78 through ’82. The influence of the bands like Liquid Liquid, ESG, Talking Heads, Gang of Four, and Blondie can be heard throughout the music genre.

The cultural origins of dance-punk music rest in Manchester, New York during the early eighties. The typical instruments that are included in dance-punk music are the drums, the guitar, the bass, the drum machine, the percussion and the synthesizers. Dance-punk experienced its mainstream popularity during the late nineties and the early two thousands.

History of Dance Punk:
In the early part of the eighties, dance punk music was used first as a term that was used to describe the post punk music groups that had a more rhythmic tempo that is slower which made it very easy to dance along to. Then, the bands could have had some influences from funk, disco, as well as other popular dance music that was popular during that time. The bands like The Clash and Public Image Ltd were well known to have been related to as a dance punk music genre at times. During the eighties and the nineties, as techno music became popular, there were some post punk/punk bands that were influenced by this music genre. Also around this time, there were a few bands of the dance punk music genre that were classified as punk-funk.

All of this leads to today’s dance punk music, which was been spearheaded by LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture and several others. One of the recent off-shoots of this particular branch in Britain has been the new wave which as been coined newly. This music genre includes certain acts like New Young Pony Club, Klaxons, along with SHITDISCO. However, it has been suggested that the new rave music genre is basically the invention of NME a British publication. However, it is questionable whether or not there is really a difference that is appreciable between dance punk and new rave.

The regional scenes consist of Los Angeles, Manchester, New York, London and Glasgow. Dance punk’s subgenre is New Rave. All-in-all, dance punk music has been classified as several things over the years but one classification that still holds true is that it is pure excellence.
