Alternative Music

Generally, the term is considered to be a synonym for the progressive politics and not for the white flight. At least that was its meaning certainly within the musical community which was when it began to be a widespread music genre in ’91, which was after Lollapalooza had demonstrated the mass appeal of the acts that were considered to be mainstream outlets which had either been ghettoized or ignored.

One of the very first Lollapalooza’s salient works actually features a combination of cultural genres and styles that embraced the Butthole Surfers, Ice-T, Nine Inch Nails and Living Colour. Alternative music was also seen as another form of protest music in solidarity that was hard edged in rap and welcome by whites and African Americans. Over the years, the alternative music genre has really changed a great deal and has become more and more popular by being applied to several different musical genres.

Learning about Alternative Music:
Today, you have alternative rap and hip hop as well as alternative rock. So you’ll see that there are different genres of music that are associated with alternative music. There are several different genres of music today that can be listed under alternative music even though there is a lot of controversy surrounding the use of the term alternative.
